Connected and driven by the devices we’ve been given.
As we move from station to station
Recording and receiving more and more information.
So please join me and lets take a look back at the big picture;
Way before hashtags and face swaps;
Before play station and x-box became a part of our collective truth After all, according to Webster's Dictionary:
Technology is any practical application
Of knowledge put to use.
So quite simply, technology means tool, and
How you use it is up to you!
125,000 years ago it was the precise way to pile sticks and
Hit rocks together to spark, start, and contain a fire;
So we could survive in any weather
Or fend off the nearest predator.
It was the clay bowls that we used cook our tribal feasts.
It was the way we channelled water
From the hills to feed our fertile seeds.
It was the hollowed tree that we first took to sea.
It was the pointed spear we used to battle rivaling tribes,
Who spoke languages we didn’t get
And might be a threat
To our way of life.
So let us not forget,
Technology is our very languages and it was the printing press;
That allowed us to spread the written word
So we could understand the same stories.
It was the cannons and whips
We used to break those
That didn’t understand
It was the gold coins we used to determine our worth
It was the axe and the wheel we used to conquer the earth.
It was the incubators that kept us safe at birth.
It is the bridges and the barricades, the poison and the cure.
The electric car and the prison cell.
The atomic bomb and the space ship that took us to the moon,
It was the signs that said “whites only”
That kept children of god in separate rooms.
It was the tombs of our ancestors and
The towers of our leaders.
It is the microchip
and the 9 millimeter.
The ball point pen and
The military drone,
The morning news and
And the microphone...
So it seems to me that how we use
The tools of our times is
Determined by and large
By the states of our mind.
So how do we design our life-time?
Are we paying attention the signs?
Sometimes the best way forward
Is to take a step back and ask ?
Who am I?
What do I want?
Whats holding me back?
What makes me laugh?
And who’d I come here to be?
How about artist?
How about poet?
How about teacher?
How about me?
And I’ve learned we’re only as strong
As the people we free;
Free of our judgements and our blame, Our hatred, and our greed.
So we can discover their fragrance Their flowers and their seeds,
And together grow this garden into to all it came to be.
How about love?
How about struggle?
How about rise above?
How about we?
Can be anything we desire
We can create our art,
Our families, our careers, and retire.
So the only remaining question is what inspires you?
Not for the dollars or the fame.
Not for the fans,
Not for the likes.
But for your spirit, for your soul, for you legacy, for your life?
So before you nervously reach for your phone
See if you can pause and remember
What you've known all along;
That your body is your home and
That all these stories have been passed off as rules but they are really only tools
Because you are you,
Able to use them or loose them, however you so choose.
